CHAPTER NINE

With the outfit paid for and bagged up, the two detectives hopped back in the taxi and returned to the hotel, still giggling at the thought of Alan’s reaction if ever he saw Miranda dressed up in the outfit. The girl on reception waved at them and motioned that she wanted a word before they went up to their room.

“Anything wrong?” Miranda asked.

“I have a message for you from a Mr. Tiago Lisboa.”

She gave Miranda a slip of paper. “Oops, looks like he wants us back at the station ASAP.”

“Crap! When did he ring?” Caroline asked the receptionist.

The woman looked at her watch. “Maybe thirty minutes ago.”

Caroline gulped. “Thanks. We better get over there before he sends out a search party for us.”

Miranda and Caroline rushed up the stairs to their room and quickly changed into more suitable clothing.

“Do you think we should wear black? Just in case we need to go out on surveillance?” Miranda asked.

“I’m going to. It’s a shame you can’t put your wig and outfit to good use tonight. What a hoot that would be.”

They jumped in another taxi back to the station. A uniformed officer showed them through to the hub, where they found an impatient Tiago waiting, his arms folded and foot tapping.

Miranda and Caroline stared at each other, agog. Eventually, Miranda said, “What? A party? For what? Do you know?”

“Mr. Lawrence apparently doesn’t need a reason to hold one. It is bizarre timing, no?”

“Very bizarre for a supposed grieving widower,” Caroline noted, looking thoughtful.

“I know that look. What are you thinking, Caroline?”

Tiago frowned, looking a little agitated that he was being left out of their thoughts.

“I’m thinking that we should jump on the chance to get in there.”

“What’s this?” Tiago asked, folding his arms tighter across his rounded stomach.

“This afternoon, we were out getting a disguise for Inspector Carr to wear, not sightseeing.”

“I see. May I ask for what reason?”

Caroline shrugged. “As a way of getting in there to see where the land lies. Sorry, English term,” she apologised after seeing the puzzled expression sweep across his face. “The inspector and I thought it would be a good idea to get inside the property.”

“Again, I ask for what purpose?” A tick had developed in his right eye.

Is he annoyed? He certainly looks annoyed. Not wise to step on the leading investigator’s toes. Miranda cleared her throat. “In case the extradition doesn’t come to fruition.”

“So you want to trap the man. Is that it?” He threw his hands up in the air and said something in his native tongue through clenched teeth.

“Not trap exactly. Maybe try to get him to confide in me.”

“Which one of you ladies does he know?”

Miranda sighed. “Me.”

Again, he huffed and
